According to Financial News and Bloomberg, Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs Group, and other banks have restricted employee access to OpenAI's ChatGPT application. Earlier this year, JPMorgan Chase & Co. barred its global workforce from accessing ChatGPT.

Bloomberg and Financial News reported Friday that CitiGroup, Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo have restricted employees' use of ChatGPT. Several major public school districts, Amazon, and JPMorgan Chase have also limited the use of OpenAI's new chatbot, which has gone viral and raised concerns about the sharing of sensitive information.

According to sources familiar with the matter who spoke with Bloomberg, Bank of America added ChatGPT to a list of unauthorized apps, which also includes WhatsApp.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc. also restricted employees' use of the chatbot through an automatic restriction on third-party software, while Deutsche Bank banned staffers from using the chatbot and disabled employees' access to it (for details, Forbes contacted Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and Bank of America).

According to Forbes, Wells Fargo has "imposed usage limits" on ChatGPT as part of its third-party software control procedures, and is evaluating "safe and effective ways" to use chatbots.

As part of its “normal controls around third-party software”, JPMorgan Chase also restricted employees’ use of ChatGPT earlier this week, multiple outlets reported, though the Telegraph had previously reported the restriction came amid concerns that sensitive financial data could be shared with the chatbot.

ChatGPT is not the first chatbot released to the public, but it has been widely considered more advanced than its predecessors, solving complicated problems, writing college-level essays and summarizing regulatory filings, though its accuracy has been called into question, with users catching it making financial mistakes. Since OpenAI released ChatGPT late last year, several major school districts in the U.S., including in Los Angeles, Seattle and in New York City—the largest district in the country—have banned it over fears students could use the chatbot to cheat on tests and essays. Amazon also warned its employees against sharing code or confidential information with the chatbot.

Some Chatbots Introduced Recently in Demonstrations Have Also Been Considered Concerns by Users. Earlier this month, Google’s Bard chatbot, which is currently in development and has not yet been made publicly accessible, made a factual error when asked about NASA’s recently-launched James Webb Space Telescope. Microsoft’s chatbot, which is in development for its search engine Bing, has also come under scrutiny for making factual errors, bizarre comments, and in one instance, telling New York Times columnist Kevin Roose it wants to come alive and that it’s in love with him.
