Apple released it's first major AR app

"For All Mankind: Time Capsule," that's based on the Apple TV Plus series. The free app for iPhone and iPad is meant to prepare viewers for season 2 of "For All Mankind," which debuts on Feb. 19.

The app features a time capsule with AR artifacts, like a mixtape and Apple II computer, to explain what happens between the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2. The series explores an alternate reality in which the Soviet Union lands a crew on the moon before the U.S., accelerating a global space race.

Users will be able to uncover memories from Danny Stevens (Casey Johnson) and his parents, astronauts Tracy Stevens (Sarah Jones) and Gordo (Michael Dorman). It includes a text-based space adventure game, called “Crater Quest,” on the Apple II.

Users with iPhone 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, and 2020 iPad Pros will see improved AR abilities thanks to those devices' LiDAR sensors.
